St. Xavier’s High School was started by the Jamshedpur Jesuit Society in the Compound of St. Xavier’s Church, Chaibasa, on July 1, 1953 with the objective of imparting quality education to the rural, tribal population of the Kolhan Region. Fr. Edward Nash S.J. was its first Headmaster. Fr. John Deeney S.J. took over from him as Headmaster in 1955. He shifted the High School to Lupungutu in 1957 in order to make the School more easily accessible to the rural children. ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself’has been the Motto of the School.
The School was recognized on October 23, 1963 by the Bihar Government. It was declared a Minority Institution on March 31, 1970..
This School has been regarded as one of the best schools in the District. For better maturity, psychological growth and to give equal opportunity to the girls, co-education was started in 2001.To further the intellectual growth of the students,the Inter College was started in 2005 and it has grown enormously. The School and the Inter College render great service to the poor and needy children who cannot afford to go to other medium schools to study.
The School had a humble beginning with37students in 1953.Now it has 1159 students of whom 812 are boys 347 are girls. The Inter College has 990 students with 743 boys and 247 girls.Thus the grand total of students in the School and Inter College is 2149.From 1953 to 2024, 14094 students have passed out from this School.While the Inter College has educated 3462 students to till now.
From 1953 to 2024, there were 81 Teachers 28 Jesuits who renderednoble service to the School and to the Students.
The School and Inter College are committed to the all-round development of the students, especially in the areas of intellectual competence, spiritual, psychological, social orientation, moral growth and excellence in every field. This is to form and to transform the students to be responsible citizens of India, to be committed to social justice and equality, and open to further growth.
Besides intellectual, psychological, social and moral growth of the students, their physical fitness is well taken care of by the extra activities of the School and theInter College. The School campus has a NIOS Center. It was recognized by the Government in 2001 and nearly 3000 students have passed out from the NIOS of Lupungutu.
Band was introduced in 1961 in the School and it has been giving a great service to the students as well as to the police parade programs. The School Band Team has trained nearly 3900 students in band and due to the band training many have joined the Army, Police, and Navy. The Band Team has participated three times in the State-level Band Completions in Ranchi and thrice won prizes. Japan Karate Association West Singhbhum originated at St. Xavier’s High School Lupungutu. Mr. Pankaj Singh, a former student of the 1989 Batch of Lupungutu started Japan Karate self-defense training program in 1996 and it is still going on very well. According to the Karate Master’s Record, he has trained around 3010 students. OurNCCTraining Program started in 1961 and 3840 students have received Certificates.
We have two Hostels in our School Campus, one for boys and one for girls. There are 265 boys and 155 girls in the Hostels.
The School conducts various training programs besides their academic curriculum such as Band, NCC, Karate, Football, Basketball, etc. The School campus has additional structures such as the Football Gallery, Basketball Gallery, Staff Quarters, Fr. John Deeney Museum, etc.
The School has an Alumni Association called Xavier Alumni Association of Lupungutu (XAAL) .They are very active and they serve the nation in various ways. A lot of them are in government jobs. Many are doctors, engineers, army men, railway employees, bankers, teachers, business men, lawyers, DCs, BDOs, et al. We value them more than the medals, certificates and other accolades our Students and Staff receive regularly. They are the Ambassadors of the School and Inter College. We are proud of them!
